Over three decades ago, many of us discovered the need… the need for speed.

Warner Bros. have been keeping us on or toes since 2019, when the first Top Gun: Maverick trailer was released. Now, the film’s release is finally on the runway, approaching take-off, after years of build up and anticipation.

A brand new official trailer was dropped only last week, leaving us high with excitement for the long-awaited second film. The trailer is sure to pull on your heart strings, triggering a flood of emotion for any fans of the original 1986 film.

New official Top Gun: Maverick trailer (2022)

The first Top Gun: Maverick trailer (2019)

The new trailer provides us with a bit more context about who each of the characters are, and their role in the plot of the film.

Tom Cruise’s character, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, is asked by the Navy to become a flight instructor at the Top Gun Naval Academy, to which he reluctantly agrees.

Maverick comes in with a breath-taking introduction, stunning his students by shooting vertically up through their formation. "Good morning, aviators," he teases from his jet. "This is your captain speaking."

A brief scene from the new trailer shows 'Rooster' - the son of slain original character 'Goose' from the 1986 film - in a US Air Force F-14 Tomcat while a Russian SU-57 soars past. From the few frames the scene occupies, it isn’t clear what has led to the conflict, or which pilot ends up the victor.

Dedicated to creating an experience not to disappoint

Tom Cruise took capturing the authenticity of the flying experience very seriously. “You just can’t create this kind of experience unless you shoot it live”. No shortcuts were taken during the filming of Top Gun: Maverick.

“In order for us to accomplish this, we have the greatest fighter pilots in the world working with us.”

The team worked with a brand new camera system that allowed 6 IMAX-Quality cameras inside the cockpit with the actors.

It is said to provide an audience experience like no other - one that simply must be experienced in the cinema in order to fully appreciate the work that has been done.

Miles Teller, who plays “Rooster” in the film, states, “When Tom hears that something is impossible or it can’t be done, that’s when he gets to work”.

With the goal of intense ‘realism’ in mind, Tom Cruise also made sure that the young actors playing the trainee aviators had a genuine understanding of army training, and put them through real, physical, intense training. Their flight-sequence performances are sure to deliver.

Top Gun: Maverick will release in cinemas May 26.
