2021 marks a successful quarter-century for Australia's largest outdoor cinema, and like a fine wine or cheese (both of which you can BYO) Moonlight Cinema only gets better with age!
After a year spent indoors, Aussies were keen to get back outside and enjoy a movie under the stars. The 25th anniversary season saw national admissions in the hundreds of thousands – a momentous result for an industry that, only months earlier, experienced an unprecedented global shutdown. Moonlight Cinema’s strong commitment to the health and safety of all patrons ensured a 100% COVID-free event run and encouraged a loyal audience of cinema-lovers back to the big screen.
Audiences flocked to enjoy Australian titles under the stars, with The Dry taking the most admits of the season and Penguin Bloom also falling in the top five films of the season. There was also a strong demand for first-run global blockbusters with Wonder Woman 1984 and Promising Young Woman – both powerful, female-led stories– taking out the number two and three spots respectively.
In line with previous seasons, Moonlight Melbourne was the most visited site. Despite a delayed season start in response to the state’s strict COVID measures, Melbourne patrons accounted for 30% of total admissions.
This season we also welcomed Aussie as Moonlight Cinema’s new Presenting Partner, offering nationwide exposure as well as several exciting opportunities to reward Aussie staff and customers. The synergy between these two iconic brands was instant, with Aussie's signature purple hue perfectly complementing Moonlight's pastel sunset palette. One look at the inflatable entrance archway makes you wonder if these brands were built for this partnership!
While the sun has set on the latest season of Moonlight, Val Morgan are busy preparing the next lot of packages for Summer 2021/22. Stay tuned!
