Cinema Sees A Hugely Successful First Half Of 2022, And It’s Not Over Yet!

With a steady stream of major blockbusters having been released over recent months, audiences have been racing into cinemas, delivering a outstanding result for the first half of 2022.

  • 32.3 million admissions

  • 54% increase compared to H1 2021

  • 1.24 million average weekly all people admissions

In the last six months, both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Top: Gun Maverick have blown away expectations and cemented themselves in the top five films of all time in Australia. Spider-Man: No Way Home has taken the 4th position, with 4.4 million admissions, and a box office result of $81.1 million, and Top Gun: Maverick has nabbed #5 film of all time with over 4 million admissions and $77.9 million in the box office.

The record-breaking success of these two blockbusters is a testament to Aussies desire to get back to the cinema and experience the best stories in the world.

Young Australians have been a driver of cinema’s resurgence in H1, with a string of youth-skewed blockbusters all performing strongly. Cinema has offered the perfect opportunity for brands to target this hard-to-reach demographic, with 16.75 million admissions to date accounting for 52% of the total cinema audience. This result also sits +69% up year on year.

Key youth titles included Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore, Jackass Forever, The Batman, and Doctor Strange: Multiverse Of Madness.

Alongside youth audiences, Roy Morgan’s research into cinema attendance in Q1 2022 also highlighted that NEOs (those who spend more, more frequently) have been racing back to cinemas, even before the release of Top Gun and Elvis.*

What’s To Come Before The End Of The Year

All of these results have absolutely blown us out of the water, however with what’s to come in the second half of 2022, we know that the end of H1 is really just the beginning.

Cinema is showing no sign of slowing down, with some of the biggest blockbusters of the year set for release in H2. There is something for everyone, with crowd pleasing action blockbusters, the best premium dramas, holiday fun for families and scary youth skewed titles to choose from.
