Box Office Boom: Women Propel Surge in Cinema Attendance, Roy Morgan reports.
Over the past year, Australia's cinema industry has experienced significant growth, with a remarkable surge in cinema attendance. In the year leading up to the March quarter of 2023, the number of moviegoers surpassed that of the same period the previous year by an impressive 2.7 million and recent findings published by Roy Morgan have shed light on the pivotal role women, Gen Z and Millennials, as well as NEOs (New Economic Order) have played.
Here’s more of what you need to know:
In the past year alone, over 6.1 million women flocked to cinemas, marking an impressive increase of 1.73 million attendees or 39%, and is expected to continue with the release of female-skewed titles such as Barbie.
All generations have shown solid increases in attendance, but a profound affection for the big screen has taken hold among younger audiences with Generation Z and Millennials (P 17-47), accounting for more than half (56%) of all cinemagoers.
The findings also reveal that NEOs (consumers who spend more, more frequently, despite high inflation and rising interest rates) play a significant role in driving the surge in cinema attendance across the population, with over 70% attending the cinema in the last year.
