For the fourth weekend in a row, Wonka has topped the Australian box office.

The last week’s numbers released today show that the film, which tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, has again come in at top spot and pulled in almost 1.5 million ticket sales since its release in mid-December last year.

“The 2023-24 summer holidays have been strong, driven by an exceptionally diverse slate of content,” Val Morgan’s director of strategy and marketing, Paul MacGregor, told Mumbrella.

Wonka has led the charge, delivering close to 1.5 million admissions since its release late last year, and continues to hold the top spot in audience delivery, with 183,000 admissions from Thursday to Sunday last weekend.”

Meanwhile the Sydney-filmed rom-com, Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, has also continued to perform since its Boxing Day release.

MacGregor added: “Anyone But You has also continued to deliver strong audiences, reporting only a -2% drop this weekend compared to its opening weekend, with 163,000 admissions over the weekend.”

The top five films at the box office this week is rounded out by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom at third (133,000 admissions this weekend), Migration at fourth (118,000 admissions) and Disney’s Wish at fifth (71,000 admissions).

Speaking to Mumbrella recently, Val Morgan’s managing director Guy Burbidge feels confident that audiences will continue to return to the cinema this year after a strong resurgence in 2023 on the back of hit films like Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Burbidge noted cinema’s comeback “looks pretty positive”, listing off Dune, Kung Fu Panda, IF, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Deadpool 3, The Fall Guy, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as some of the stronger titles to debut in the first half of 2024.

“So there’s a lot to like about where we’re where we’re headed, in 2024, from a title perspective,” he said.
