Return to Middle-earth: The War of the Rohirrim saddles up for an epic prequel showdown.

Warner Bros. are bringing Middle-earth back to the big screen with a thrilling new chapter in the Lord of the Rings universe. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a Japanese animation feature film directed by award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama. Set 183 years before the events of the original trilogy, this prequel will dive deep into the legendary history of Rohan and the tragic tale of King Helm Hammerhand.

The newly released trailer reveals an epic struggle for Rohan’s survival, filled with bloodthirsty quests for vengeance and encounters with mythical creatures. The story centres on Helm Hammerhand, the formidable King of Rohan, who is suddenly attacked by Wulf, a ruthless Dunlending lord seeking revenge for his father's death. Helm and his people are forced into a desperate last stand at the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg—later known as Helm’s Deep—to defend their kingdom. With overwhelming odds against them, the fate of Rohan falls to Helm’s daughter, Héra, who must rise to lead in a time of great peril.

Anime’s global recognition has never been more evident, with the genre reaching new heights at the 2024 Oscars where The Boy and the Heron made history by winning Best Animated Feature. This achievement stands as a major milestone, being only the second hand-drawn 2D film to earn such acclaim, underscoring anime’s expanding influence and artistry on the world stage. Riding this wave of success, The War of the Rohirrim is set to be the first anime adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic Middle-earth saga, aiming to bring Tolkien’s immersive storytelling to life through bold and striking animation. Helmed by director Kamiyama, known for his impactful work on Ghost in the Shell, Star Wars: Visions, and Blade Runner: Black Lotus, the film promises a blend of action, emotion, and intricate storytelling that is set to redefine how audiences experience this beloved fantasy world.

The film’s voice cast features Brian Cox (Succession) as King Helm Hammerhand, Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) as Héra, and Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) as the vengeful Wulf. Miranda Otto reprises her iconic role as Éowyn, the Shieldmaiden of Rohan, and serves as the film’s narrator, seamlessly connecting this new story to the beloved original trilogy.

With Sir Peter Jackson, the visionary director of the original trilogy, serving as one of the executive producers, The War of the Rohirrim stays closely connected to the roots of the fantastical originals, ensuring this new take honours its Middle-earth legacy. Blending Tolkien’s rich lore with the dynamic storytelling of Japanese animation, the film promises an epic return to the world of Middle-earth that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will march into cinemas on December 12.
