Pathaan Becomes Australia’s Biggest Bollywood Movie
Bollywood movie admissions broke records in 2022 and the momentum has continued into 2023 with the release of Siddharth Anand’s highly anticipated Pathaan.
Released in cinemas across Australia on 25 January in Hindi, Pathaan took less than two weeks to become the biggest Bollywood film of all time. The film has already overtaken the highly successful RRR, pulling over $4.2M at the Australian Box Office, and delivering over 270,000 admissions and counting.
The film was widely popular with the youth audiences, with 68% of all admissions falling between 18-39 year old demo.
Globally, the high-octane spy thriller starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham has been a standout success delivering over $100M at the Box Office in just 12 days, the first Bollywood movie ever to achieve this milestone without a China release.
“The performance of Pathaan is a clear example of the demand for international titles on Australian shores and we’re in such a unique position at Val Morgan to give brands the opportunity to connect with culturally and linguistically diverse audiences in one of the most immersive experiences available in the country,” said Paul MacGregor, Director of Strategy and Marketing at Val Morgan Group.
In Australia, the Bollywood genre already doubled the number of titles released in comparison to STLY, indicating 2023 will be a huge year for the genre across cinemas nationwide.
