Tina Fey’s reboot of the 2004 comedy classic Mean Girls topped the Australian box office this weekend, bringing in $3.4 million in its first four days at the cinema.
Over 150,000 people saw Mean Girls over the weekend, trumping Wonka, which drew a healthy 122,000 in its fifth weekend, to bring its total box office to an impressive $31.2 million.
Anyone But You, shot in Sydney and starring it-girl Sydney Sweeney, drew 117,000 over the weekend, bringing its total to $13.2million.
The Beekeeper, another new release, drew 105,000 viewers over opening weekend, while Migration flew into fifth spot, with 713,000 cinema-goers catching the animation smash.
“Women have ruled the summer box office with strong female-centric storylines continuing to resonate with audiences,” noted Paul MacGregor, director of strategy and marketing at Val Morgan.
“Last weekend was no exception with the impressive opening of the modern reimaging of the iconic Mean Girls, which grossed $3.4 million in its first four days, and the continuation of the breakout success of Anyone But You.
“Across the board, total weekend admissions sat just under one million, with 993,000 Aussies hitting the big screen, again speaking to the strength of the content slate as we head into 2024.”
Box office was down from the prior weekend, albeit by just 1%, continuing cinema’s strong start to 2024.
