Marvel Studios’ latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has caused absolute mayhem in cinemas delivering the biggest opening weekend of any film this year, and since the December 2021 release of Spiderman: No Way Home.
Across its Wednesday to Sunday opening weekend, the film amassed an incredible 933,000 moviegoers - a result that helped drive the largest cumulative weekend audience so far this year, with an astonishing 1,200,000 admissions across the nation, and a result that sits +50% ahead of the Wednesday-Sunday opening weekend of The Batman.
Guy Burbidge, Managing Director of Val Morgan Cinema says “As one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, it’s no surprise to see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness deliver such exceptional box office and audience results across its opening weekend. 70% of the opening weekend audience fell within the hard-to-reach P14-39 demographic, proving young audiences have a strong appetite to consume quality content on the big screen.
With Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic Park: Dominion, Lightyear, Elvis, and Minions: Rise of Gru all releasing in the coming 6 weeks, we will only see audiences accelerate and smash records.”
At the box office, the film has delivered a massive $17.2 million to date across Australia, smashing the original Doctor Strange weekend box office result by +169%.
