Cinema is back! Big screen sees biggest post-pandemic results over last weekend.

  • Cinema sees its biggest weekend since lockdown, hitting a stellar 675,000 admits, equivalent to 89% of the audience figures in the same weekend in 2019, even with NSW capacity restrictions in play.

  • Momentum is expected to continue as the biggest summer of cinema approaches with other highly anticipated films dropping over the next few months: Bond: No Time To Die, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, The Matrix: Resurrections, Sing 2 and Spiderman: No Way Home.

The Eternals

Cinema is back in fine form, garnering the biggest admit weekend post-2021 lockdowns with all states back on board and able to get in front of the big screen. Even with NSW cinemas operating with capacity restriction last week, the nation’s total audience admits for the weekend hit 675,000 which is equivalent to 89% of audience figures for the same week in 2019, proving that audiences have been eager to return to the #1 cultural activity across the nation.

Marvel’s Eternals had a strong opening weekend result and was the largest contributor to the Thursday – Sunday figures, with over 45% of the audience in attendance for the iconic studios third theatrical release this year after Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings released in July and September, respectively.

Guy Burbidge Managing Director of Val Morgan, comments “We’re so thrilled to see that cinema had its biggest weekend we’ve seen post-2021 lockdowns. With the entire nation now able to hit the big screen, these weekend results are exactly what we were hoping for, and we expect that audience numbers will continue to skyrocket in the coming weeks as we gear up for a jam-packed content slate to end the year. Cinema is such a key and unparalleled opportunity for advertisers to align with premium content and get in front of engaged audiences in the lead up to the busy Christmas period.”

The momentum is expected to continue for the tail end of 2021, with over 10 new blockbuster titles dropping within the next 8 weeks, including Bond: No Time To Die releasing on Thursday, which is expected to blow audience admit figures out of this world.
