It’s been another massive weekend in the world of cinema with a spectacular 1,400,000 Aussies hitting the big screen to catch the latest and greatest blockbusters from Thursday to Sunday - marking the biggest weekend admissions result of 2022 and since Boxing Day last year.

Family favourite, Minions: The Rise of Gru and highly anticipated biopic of the ‘King of Rock and Roll’, Elvis both garnered stellar admission results over their opening weekend, with an impressive 357,000 and 320,000 respectively.

Top Gun: Maverick is still flying high at Mach 5 speeds, continuing to dominate at the local and global box office. Paramount has now announced that it has officially become the 5th highest-grossing film of all time in Australia. In just 32 days, 3,400,000 Aussies have jumped aboard the monumental big-screen experience, and the film has amassed a spectacular $64.16 million, taking over Titanic ($57.7 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($58 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($62 million) and The Lion King ($64.1 million).

Top Gun: Maverick has also hit the $1 billion mark globally and currently stands as the highest-grossing film worldwide of 2022 so far, along with Tom Cruise’s best-performing film ahead of Mission: Impossible: Fallout which was released in August 2018.

Jurassic World: Dominion and Lightyear also helped contribute to the weekend’s success.

Just when we think big couldn’t get bigger, it does.
